Slashdot reports that Australian schools (as well as UK schools) are discouraging their students from taking math. The schools are apparently discouraging students from taking higher level math in an attempt to boost their results on school league tables.

If that’s true, it’s really disappointing, disgusting even. That schools are so focused on results that they discourage students from trying to learn more. Have we really become so result-oriented? Even in our schools? Schools should be about education and encouraging students to learn. To discourage students from pursuing advanced courses for the sake of better results goes against the very basis of what education should be. I can only hope the claims/reports are untrue.
