One of the traits of a good striker in football is running ahead of the ball. I’ve heard quite a few commentators praising strikers for making a run, and taking a gamble on the possibility that the ball might end up there. I’ve seen many goals been scored from rebounds or loose balls because a striker was willing to gamble.

I think that’s a skill that is useful for all of us. Taking a gamble on where the ball might be. The “ball” could be anything. If you’re in business, that ball could be your targeted market. Where will the market be in 5 years time? You probably won’t have a definite answer, but more often than not, it’s worth the gamble.

Planning for where the market will be instead of where it is now means that you’re one step ahead of your competitors. Positioning yourself for the future is often a better choice than merely reacting to what has happened. Because then, the control and initiative is in your hands. And that’s really important.

Are you willing to take the gamble of positioning for the future?
